For many years the Chesapeake Bay Foundation has sponsored “Farmers to the Bay,” hosting farmers from the Shenandoah Valley on weekend-long trips to Tangier Island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. The trips feature hands-on Bay exploration, education, and discovery, but the real focus is on meeting and engaging Tangier watermen, the island natives whose livelihoods depend upon clean water and a productive Chesapeake Bay. While the trips bring together men and women who live hundreds of miles apart, participants discover they have much in common –and that their worlds are more connected than they imagined.
